What is OpenForest4D?

OpenForest4D is a web-based platform that allows users to generate accurate, research-grade maps of forest structure and above-ground biomass over time.

What forestry products can be generated via OpenForest4D?

OpenForest4D will enable users to generate digital surface and terrain models, canopy height, forest canopy gaps, identify individual trees, and delineate their crowns. It will also enables measurement of crown characteristics such as height, width, volume, and surface area.

OpenForest4D will also supports on-demand, wall-to-wall forest attribute mapping—including above-ground biomass, canopy height, and cover—at a 30-meter resolution.

What are the user pathways on the OpenForest4D platform?

OpenForest4D aims to support a broad spectrum of users from beginners to domain experts

  1. Beginner users
For beginner/advanced beginner users the OpenForest4D science gateway enables quick generation of research-grade forestry products online with step-by-step interactive interfaces and no local computation needed.
  2. Intermediate/proficient users
Advanced beginner/intermediate users can also take advantage of Jupyter notebooks or Google Earth Engine apps for more flexible and interactive exploration.
  3. Expert users
Open source access to platform code and methods via the project’s GitHub repository, empowering expert users to customize data processing, contribute to platform improvements, and conduct reproducible research.

What educational resources are available through OpenForest4D?

To support both learners and practitioners, OpenForest4D provides guides that cover forest science fundamentals and practical tutorials for applying its online tools and data workflows. These resources are available in the guides section.
